A book that pairs photographs I took of Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, a mall located just outside Washington, D.C., with annotated primary sources—such as press releases, annual reports, and social media posts—to chronicle the dramatic measures undertaken by Simon Property Group, America’s largest mall operator, to reinvent the brick-and-mortar shopping mall and adapt to a reconfigured retail economy. Banners throughout Fashion Centre, which was undergoing renovation at the time of the photographs, declared, “Style evolution in progress,” an apt description of the mall’s physical and behavioral adaptations.
