GAWA (Great Acronym Wall of America) is a sound- and language-based response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border. The “wall” functions as a glossary of acronyms related to the enforcement of federal immigration law; interacting with them reveals their meaning and function. The website is set in the Department of Homeland Security’s official typeface, Joanna MT, which was designed by Eric Gill, a documented perpetrator of sexual abuse. The acronyms largely represent government agencies involved in the surveillance, apprehension, detention, or removal of “illegal aliens" in the name of public safety.
