Various Gray Signage And A School is a typological investigation of the signage inside Edward P. Evans Hall, home to the Yale School of Management. I placed an ad for the book in an issue of the Yale Daily News, as an homage to an ad that Ed Ruscha placed for his iconic artist’s book, Twentysix Gasoline Stations, in the March 1964 issue of Artforum. Copies of the book were sold at the Odds and Ends Art Book Fair at Yale University Art Gallery in December 2018 and 2019, as well as at the Yale School of Art’s annual Open Studios in April 2019. Purchasers include Michael Bierut, whose office sign is featured in the book; Tom Strong, who designed the signage; Bob Saidi, Yale SOM’s Director of Facilities Planning, who installed the signage; and the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library at Yale.
An ad for Twentysix Gasoline Stations that Ed Ruscha placed in the March 1964 issue of Artforum, next to ad for Various Gray Signage that I placed in the October 26, 2018, issue of the Yale Daily News.
Michael Bierut, former Lecturer in the Practice of Design and Management at Yale SOM, purchased a copy of my book and tweeted my photograph of his office sign to announce the end of his appointment.
After Tom Strong gifted me an old proof of one of his creations, my workstation briefly doubled as the “McCance Interview Suite.”
