Style Evolution pairs photographs I took of Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, a mall located just outside Washington, D.C., with various communications—such as press releases, annual reports, and social media posts—to chronicle the aggressive measures undertaken by Simon Property Group, America’s largest mall operator, to reinvent the brick-and-mortar shopping mall and adapt to a changing retail economy. Banners throughout Fashion Centre, which was undergoing renovation at the time of the photographs, declared, “Style evolution in progress,” a fitting description of the mall’s dramatic adaptations.
